Top of the morning( Sharecropping ) : Sharecropping in the U. S. became a widespread response to the economic upheaval caused by the end of slavery during and after the reconstruction period. Sharecropping was a way for a Freedman to work on the land and be paid for it. The landowner provided land, housing(a shack), tools and seed, and perhaps even a mule. At harvest time the Frredman/sharecropper received a share of the crop (from one-third to one-half), which paid off his debt to the landowner. A disadvantage to Sharecropping was a new credit system known as the CROP LIEN. Under this system, a landowner extended a line of credit to the sharecropper while taking the year’s crops as collateral. The sharecropper could then draw food and supplies all year long. When the crop was harvested, the landowner who held the lien sold the harvest for the the cropper and settled the debt, while sometimes taking more than his fair share and leaving the sharecropper with little to nothing.
